  • Register in advance via the NBA website: https://www.northville-basketball.com/travel

  • Bring your own basketball and water bottle

  • No cost to try out

  • Players may only attend tryouts for their current grade (no "playing up")

  • Tryout participation is mandatory for all players, including returners

  • Returning players should not wear any Northville Travel Basketball apparel at tryouts

  • Parents may observe, but no video or photos allowed

Eligibility: Northville Travel Basketball Association (“NBA”)  is dedicated exclusively to players who either live within the Northville School District map or attend Northville Public Schools. To be clear, if your child attends a private school (OLV, Northville Christian, etc) AND you live in the Northville School District Map they are still eligible and we welcome their participation. Players cannot "play up". They can only participate on the team formed for their current grade. All teams are grade-based regardless of age.

Philosophy: NBA is a Northville community-based, competitive, developmental program that aims to provide approximately equal playing time for all players. That said, factors that may influence playing time include: court awareness, practice commitment (attendance/work ethic), attitude, game situations, etc.

Team Selection Process:

  • Players are evaluated on fundamentals (shooting, ball handling, rebounding, etc.) and competitive game situations (3v3 or 5v5 depending on court space and number of players).

  • Players are scored using a rubric by a panel of NBA Board members and past head coaches.

**Note: Coaches and Board members are NOT allowed to evaluate their own child.

  • Shortly after tryouts, head coaches will be selected for each grade. Please show interest in being a head coach or assistant coach during your registration process.

  • Once coaches are selected, they will review the results of tryout scores with the NBA Board.   Coaches have limited input to make adjustments to the roster to create a balanced team or based on prior knowledge of players.  The NBA Board and head coach will finalize the teams.

  • Teams are generally 10 players.  We have found that having fewer than 10 can be problematic in case of injuries or when players are unable to attend a game or practice; greater than 10 players makes it very difficult to distribute playing time equally.

  • Head coaches begin calling players to offer a spot on the team. If the player verbally accepts the offer, an invite to financially commit will be sent to families through the Sports Engine system. Full payment (see costs below) will be expected within 24 hrs to secure the spot. In the instance there are two teams within a grade level, the Orange team will be formed first, then calls will start to be made to form the Black team. We expect all teams to be fully formed within 7 days of the tryout.

  • Please encourage your child to be considerate about speaking to others about making a team, especially while the process is ongoing throughout the week.

  • For those that do not make a team, the cut email from the NBA will go out to players immediately after all teams at that grade level are confirmed and formed. This will happen within 1 week of tryouts.

Cost:

  • NBA is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization run by a volunteer Board and volunteer coaches.

  • 3rd to 6th grades: $775 if ordering a new uniform; $675 if reusing uniform from last season.

  • 7th & 8th grades: $675 if ordering a new uniform; $575 if reusing uniform from last season.

  • The costs include:

    • Uniforms (Reversible jersey top/bottom, reversible practice jersey top, shooter shirt)

    • Big Cat League Fees

    • Gym space rental for approx 30 practices

    • Insurance coverage per player

    • Team entry to NBA-hosted basketball tournament at NHS (generally in February)

    • Partnership with Get Skillz Basketball, MakeShots, and Hoop Drillz for 3 training sessions on fundamentals incorporated into the season during practice times

    • Access to Northville High School Basketball program through special team nights and locker room access

    • Participation in the Northville Holiday Lighted Parade

Once the team is formed

  • Families will have the opportunity to view sizing options for uniforms and revisit the sizes chosen during registration to make any needed changes.

  • Coaches will ask for conflicts to try to accommodate the most players on the team when securing gym space/scheduling practices.

  • Coaches will discuss expectations with players and families, along with important dates to add to the calendar.

Practices:

  • In season (early November through mid/late March for 3rd-6th grades and January through mid-March for 7th and 8th grades) = Most teams practice 2x per week

  • Practice facilities will be in Northville, Livonia, Novi, South Lyon, or Plymouth.  It is very challenging to secure enough gym space during the winter months for all of our NBA boys and girls programs.   We make every effort to get gyms that are nearby and have reasonable hours.   That said there, may be some practices that end at 9:00pm.

  • If you’re aware of other gyms that may be available to rent, please let the NBA Board know!

Games:

All of our teams participate in the Big Cat League and will play two games on Sundays in Novi, Milford, or South Lyon).  NBA “Orange” teams play in the “Elite” division of Big Cat and NBA “Black” teams play in the regular division

  • 3rd & 4th: Games begin in early January and run through early March

  • 5th & 6th: Games begin in early December and run through mid-March

  • 7th & 8th: Games begin in early January and run through mid-March

Tournaments:

  • Entry fee included for all teams to participate in the NBA annual tournament at NHS (February)

  • Coaches will schedule tournaments at their discretion (for an additional cost; generally ~$25 per player per tournament)

  • Most tournaments are in the Metro Detroit region, but some could require overnight stays

  • The majority are one-day events on Saturdays although some coaches may choose two-day tournaments when schedules allow
